The city of Manchester, in England, has become a powerhouse in the North – with many suggesting it has everything the capital has but with a more affordable price tag. While I only had 24 hours in the city this time round, it’s one I often return to.
It’s one of my favourite cities in the UK as it has a bit of everything – culture, a major creative feel and some of the bars and restaurants.
For those looking to explore the city, here’s a 24 hour guide to spending your time in Manchester over the Christmas period based on a recent trip I was invited on by Hyatt Manchester in November.
Where to stay in Manchester: 24 Hours in Manchester
Whether you’re visiting for the holiday period or throughout the rest of the year, the Hyatt Manchester feels like a home away from home.
Under the same roof there is the Hyatt Regency which is the hotel, but also Hyatt House which offers studios and one-bedroom suites which make for the perfect option for longer stays or people working remotely while exploring.
On my trip, I stayed on the 16th floor in a one-bedroom suite with a fully-equipped kitchenette.
There was 45 meters of space, meaning I had the chance to work from different areas throughout the suite.
It’s in a prime location too, being just a short walk away from the action.
*I’ve done a more in-depth review about the hotel here.
P.S. Hyatt House has free laundry facilities (washing and drying!) and room rates include breakfast too.
How to spend a day in Manchester – Christmas Edition
Morning in Manchester: 10:30am
After checking in (or asking the hotel to store your bags until check in opens later) we’re walking 0.3 miles to the recently renovated Manchester Museum.
It’s free entry and housed in a beautiful 130-year-old building which includes a number of different collections.
One of the most impressive areas was the zoology collection which was expansive and includes specimens from all over the world – from the Arctic to the Antarctic. It was interesting to see them up close!
Lunch in Manchester: 12:15pm
From there, jump in an Uber or taxi and head to Good Yards Street which is where the recently opened Caravan restaurant is.
After opening a number of restaurants in London by three people from New Zealand, the brand now has a home in the north too.
While they do have several pizzas, large plates, and bowls on the menu, I recommend opting for the small plates and sharing between the table. The burrata was incredible, as was the tiramisu martini.
Afternoon in Manchester: 2:00pm
Now it’s time to explore the much-loved Manchester Festive Markets which are spread across Piccadilly Gardens, Exchange Square, and Cathedral Gardens.
There are over 300 stalls which offer a whole range of treats – from mulled wine to unique gifts. In one of the pop-up bars, you’re able to take home a memento in the form of a sweet Christmas mug.
The market is also right in the center of the bustling city, with stores all around for those who wish to do some pre-dinner shopping.
Dinner in Manchester: 6:00pm
Once you’re back at Hyatt House and have checked in, it’s time to get ready for dinner.
The Laureate Restaurant sits on the bottom floor of Hyatt House and on the first Thursday of every month it hosts an all-you-can-eat curry night for £20 per person.
The dishes come from family recipes by people working at the hotel, meaning a wide range of cult favorites that have been tried and tested over many years are on offer.
My personal favorite was the Luftis Indonesian Beef Rendang, but it was a difficult choice as they were all moreish.
Evening in Manchester: 9:00pm
The Twilight Trail is running at Mayfield Park until 31st December and it’s a captivating outdoor experience which includes art and lights.
It’s a self-guided activity so you can spend as long as you wish exploring, but it takes around 30 minutes to 45 minutes to complete. The tickets cost £11 for adults and children are £9.
Drinks in Manchester: 9:45pm
Just next door to the Twilight Trail is Freight Island. This is accessible through Mayfield Park and while it’s open year-round, it has been fully Christmas-yfied for December.
It’s essentially a food and bar market inside a warehouse, with huge tables for seating and a bar serving up creative Christmas cocktails.
It even has a pour-your-own Guinness machine, along with a tent outside named Santa’s Grotto.
Day Two: Manchester Itinerary
Breakfast in Manchester: 08:00am
There’s nothing better than a hearty hotel breakfast which is exactly what Hyatt House offers. Again, head down to the Laureate Restaurant and an abundant breakfast spread will await you.
After loading up on coffee and a traditional English breakfast, it’s time to head out for one more activity before ending your 24 hours in Manchester.
Morning activity in Manchester: 09:00am
To blow the cobwebs away before leaving the city, head on a 16 minute walk (0.8 miles) to the nearby Whitworth Art Gallery.
The building contains over 60,000 items in its collection which includes a range of historic exhibitions and contemporary commissions.
The art is outstanding and before you go don’t miss a visit to the cafe which features floor-to-ceiling windows which makes you feel as though you’re sitting in a glass box submerged in nature.
